Iraqi President Nizar Amedi received the President of the Iraqi Football Association, Younis Mahmoud, along with his accompanying delegation, on Thursday, 11 June 2026, at the Salam Palace in Baghdad. The delegation included several members of the Executive Office as well as the Association’s Secretary-General.

At the start of the meeting, the President was briefed on the national team’s latest preparations for the 2026 World Cup finals, including the technical and administrative arrangements being made to ensure optimal conditions for a performance that reflects the standing of Iraqi football and meets supporters’ expectations. President Amedi stressed the importance of providing all necessary requirements for success at the tournament, so that the team may compete with distinction on the global stage.

He added: “Our hearts are with the Lions of Mesopotamia, and all our resources are committed to supporting them on their World Cup journey.” He noted that the tournament represents a significant milestone in the history of Iraqi football and called for enhanced coordination and efforts across the Iraqi Football Association, sports media, and the public to create a supportive environment for the players and technical staff.

For his part, Younis Mahmoud outlined the federation’s programmes and plans aimed at developing the game and raising the standard of both national teams and domestic clubs, in line with fans’ aspirations and to strengthen Iraqi football’s presence regionally and internationally. He also underlined the determination of the national team players to achieve strong results at the World Cup and enhance the country’s standing in global football.
