US Vice President J.D. Vance has said that Washington is “very close” to reaching an agreement with Iran over its nuclear programme, while emphasising that talks are still ongoing and no final deal has been reached.

In an interview with CBS News, Vance said the negotiations had made significant progress, suggesting that a breakthrough could come in the near future, although the timeline remains uncertain.

He stated that an agreement could be reached as early as next week, but also acknowledged that discussions could continue for months depending on the outcome of remaining technical issues.

Vance added that the goal of the negotiations is to secure a long-term arrangement that prevents Iran from developing nuclear weapons and provides lasting stability beyond the current US administration.

However, he stressed that while progress has been made, “there is still work to do”, indicating that several key issues remain unresolved before any formal agreement can be finalised.

US President Donald Trump has also expressed optimism about the direction of the talks, while maintaining that Washington continues to apply pressure alongside diplomatic engagement.

Iranian officials, for their part, have signalled willingness to continue negotiations through indirect channels, despite ongoing regional tensions and disagreements over core issues in the talks.

The comments come amid heightened diplomatic activity between Washington and Tehran, with both sides indicating cautious optimism but stopping short of confirming any imminent breakthrough.
