Iraqi Prime Minister Meets Chevron Executives to Discuss Expanding Energy Investment

The Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi met with Chevron Corporation President Mark Nelson and the company’s board of directors on Thursday, 16 July 2026, at the firm’s headquarters. The meeting was attended by the Ministers of Oil and Electricity, the Head of the Council of Advisors, several government advisers, and the Iraqi Ambassador to Washington.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, al-Zaidi urged Chevron to expand and accelerate its operations in Iraq in support of the government’s strategic objectives of increasing crude oil production, boosting the country’s refining capacity, and diversifying oil export routes.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s readiness to provide the necessary approvals, support and incentives for the construction of oil refineries and other infrastructure for the petrochemical industry. He also stressed the importance of increasing gas production and transferring advanced technologies to Iraq to speed up development in the sector.

Al-Zaidi further reiterated the government’s commitment to creating an attractive investment environment for international companies operating in Iraq, highlighting the role of such investments in generating employment, strengthening the national economy and enhancing the country’s ability to address future challenges.

For his part, Chevron President Mark Nelson expressed the company’s interest in investing in oil fields in southern Iraq, pipeline projects linking production sites to regional ports, and associated storage facilities. He also affirmed Chevron’s intention to accelerate implementation timelines for these projects.
