Shaswar Abdulwahid, leader of the New Generation Movement, has confirmed that his party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) are moving towards signing a political alliance agreement by the end of next week. He said both sides are seeking to introduce a new approach to governance in the Kurdistan Region.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday evening, 24 June 2026, Abdulwahid stated that the New Generation Movement and the PUK have agreed that the post of Prime Minister in the next Kurdistan Regional Government should be held by their alliance. He argued that replacing the current Prime Minister would have a positive impact on citizens’ lives and bring about meaningful changes in the administration of the region.

Abdulwahid stressed that the proposed alliance between the New Generation Movement and the PUK is not aimed against the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). He also rejected reports claiming that an agreement had been reached between him and the PUK during his imprisonment, describing such claims as inaccurate and misleading.

He further alleged that the KDP was responsible for his arrest and claimed that votes cast for the New Generation Movement in the most recent elections had been taken from the party on the orders of the KDP.
