A 16-year-old student from Sulaymaniyah is making early strides as a writer, translator, and programmer, having already published two books and working across multiple languages and technical fields.

Ronya Mohammed, an 11th-grade student at the private Kurdistan Genius School in Sulaymaniyah, says she is motivated by a desire “to serve the language and literature of my nation”, despite her young age.

She speaks English, French, Arabic, Persian, and Turkish, and has published two works: Ronya’s Fairy Tales, written when she was eight, and Ronya’s Stories, released at the age of 12. Alongside her literary work, she is also engaged in computer programming, with skills in Python, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.

“My mother, father, brother, a friend named Raza Ali, as well as my school teachers and several other writers, are my supporters and encouragers,” she said, crediting her support network for her development.

She explained that her interest in languages began at the age of five, initially through cartoons before developing through self-study. “I thought it would be favourable to learn the languages of neighbouring countries and the wider world early on,” she said.

Ronya is currently working on a children’s book, translating it from Kurdish into French, an experience she describes as particularly rewarding. “It has become clear to me that translating from your mother tongue into another language is easier because you can better visualise the words,” she noted.

Looking ahead, she plans to write a book for children that combines science, technology, and culture, with the aim of helping younger readers maintain their national identity while engaging with modern themes.
