The agreement between Iran and the US.
The leaders of the G7 welcomed Wednesday’s announcement of an agreement between the United States and Iran, expressing their support for its implementation and their willingness to assist in ensuring its success.
In a joint statement, the leaders described the US-Iran agreement as a “historic opportunity” to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, reiterating that Tehran must never be allowed to possess such a capability.
The statement emphasised that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz must remain free, uninterrupted and without charges, adding that the maritime security initiative led by France and the United Kingdom could help restore shipping traffic through the strait and strengthen its security.
On regional matters, the leaders reaffirmed their support for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Lebanon, while endorsing efforts to ensure that all weapons remain exclusively under state control.
They also pledged to accelerate plans aimed at diversifying global energy supplies in order to reduce economic vulnerability linked to the Strait of Hormuz and safeguard the stability of international energy markets.
