The new Iraqi Minister of Environment Halo Mustafa Askari and members of the PUK block in the Iraqi Parliament.

On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the Iraqi Parliament convened and elected Dr. Halo Mustafa Askari as the Minister of Environment for the Iraqi federal government, succeeding former minister Nizar Amedi.

Dr. Bryar Rashid, a member of the Iraqi Parliament representing the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc, told PUKMEDIA that the parliamentary session began this afternoon, during which Dr. Halo Mustafa Askari, the PUK candidate, was elected as the Minister of Environment in the federal government, succeeding Mr. Nizar Amedi, who previously requested to be relieved of his duties to focus on party responsibilities." 

He also noted that "the new minister has taken the legal oath following his election by the parliament."

Nizar Amedi, the former Environment Minister and member of the PUK Political Bureau, resigned around a month ago to focus on party responsibilities in Baghdad, where he was designated as the head of the Political Bureau's office during the party's fifth congress.

Who is Halo Askari?

Halo Mustafa Askari has a PhD in Environmental Health and Safety.

He served as an advisor on environmental concerns to former Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Dr. Barham Salih, from 2010 to 2012.

He was an advisor in the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Kurdistan Region from 2012 until 2018.

He was the Chairman of the Environment Board of the Kurdistan Region from 2018 until 2020.

He was an advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region from 2020 to 2021.
