Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met with US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf at the State Department in Washington.

In a meeting that was attended by Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, Head of the Relations Bureau, the latest political developments in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the region were discussed.

The two sides discussed the issues surrounding elections process, the internal situation within Kurdistan Region and the outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad. The two sides emphasized the need to hold fair elections in order to promote stability and democracy in the Kurdistan Region. President Bafel Jalal Talabani stated that the elections must be held on schedule and they must respond to the demands of the people, take democracy to a higher level and bring about changes in the governance process.

On the issues between Erbil and Baghdad, both sides agreed to end the conflicts, resolve the issues on the basis of the constitution and follow a genuine partnership in the management of the country.

President Bafel Jalal Talabani outlined PUK’s policy and strategy on the totality of the equations and said that the PUK will continue its efforts to serve the people and maintain stability in the region. To this end, we emphasize the continuation of constructive dialogue and moving towards a more prosperous and more democratic region.

Strengthening and developing relations between the two sides was another topic of the meeting and expansion of cooperation and coordination was reaffirmed.
