Ancient history

The modern city of Slemani was founded on November 14, 1784, by the Kurdish Emir Ibrahim Pasha Baban, who named the city after his father, Suleiman Pasha, one of the Emirs of the Baban dynasty, which had an emirate during that period in the Slemani region.

Slemani was made the capital of the Kurdish Emirate of Baban after its founding. The capital of the Baban was Qalachwalan town which is now a part of the Slemani governorate. Qalachwalan was a battlefield during the Ottoman-Safavid conflicts, so Ibrahim Pasha Baban began establishing a new city in 1783 to become the capital of the Emirate of Baban and in 1785, he completed the establishment of trade markets and the governor’s palace and also established a market there, so the residents of the neighboring villages began to move to the new city. Slemani remained the capital of the Baban Emirate until 1851.

In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the city of Slemani was a center of national culture and Kurdish political movements, from which King Mahmud announced his revolution against the British occupation and declared an independent state, and the British occupation declared its recognition of this state.
