Iraq will inaugurate its first solar-powered electricity generation plant by the end of 2025, Iraq's Minister of Oil Hayyan Abdul Ghani announced on Sunday, 27 July 2025.
The facility will have an initial capacity of 250 megawatts.
In a statement to the Iraq's state media (INA), Abdul Ghani confirmed that the project forms part of the Integrated South Iraq Agreement signed with French energy giant TotalEnergies. “The first phase of the project, with a capacity of 250 megawatts, will be completed and operational by the end of 2025,” he stated.
The minister added that the wider agreement with TotalEnergies includes a long-term commitment to develop a 1,000-megawatt solar power facility in southern Iraq.
“The Ministry of Oil’s support for the energy sector is not limited to figures or projects,” Abdul-Ghani said. “It reflects a concrete reduction in emissions, expansion of clean energy capacity, and a firm step towards a just transition to a low-carbon economy.”
