the United States (US) Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Linda Thomas-Greenfield on Wednesday is visiting Turkey to focus on the extensive support provided by the UN and its partner agencies to meet the dire humanitarian needs in Syria.

The visit will last for three days during which Thomas-Greenfield will meet with senior Turkish officials, a group of Syrian refugees, UN agencies and aid groups.

Thomas-Greenfield’s visit comes in the context of “the US works with the UN to reauthorize and expand the UN’s ability to provide humanitarian cross-border aid into Syria.”

The American Ambassador will emphasize “the urgent need for additional crossings and stepped-up international assistance, as there is no viable alternative to alleviate the vast needs of vulnerable populations in northern Syria.”

There are two crossings with Iraq and Kurdistan region of Iraq in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), Semalka and Tal Kochar (al-Ya’roubiyah).

Tel Kochar (al-Ya’roubiyah) crossing has been closed to UN humanitarian access to northeast Syria for more than two years due to a veto used by Russia and China, which exacerbated the challenges facing the region, while Semalka is non-formal crossing.

In contrast, there are two open crossings with Turkey in the Syrian opposition-controlled areas, Bab al-Salama and Bab al-Hawa.
