The Center of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in the Qarachogh area of Makhmur district, some 60 kilometers southwest of Erbil, is currently busy preparing a project to reconstruct the villages of area to encourage the return of the people, said the head of PUK's Qarachogh Center.

He also warned that the situation of the villages of Makhmur and Dibis districts are worrying and will pave the way for more Arabization process, as well more terrorist activities.

Ghazi Faisal, the head of PUK's Qarachogh Center, told PUKmedia: "We suggested that the people of the borders of Dibis and Makhmur should be encouraged to return to their villages and rehabilitate those areas, which was evacuated due to conflicts with ISIS and the return of the Iraqi army after the 2017 referendum events."

"The area is currently safe and peaceful to a degree, as ISIS terrorists have been weakened by the coalition forces, Iraqi forces, and the Kurdish Peshmerga force. On the other hand, we have a good relationship with the Arab brothers of this border and we have no fear that they would harm the people of the Kurdish villages," he said.

He also pointed out that, apart from security for rebuilding those villages and returning their people, "we also need cooperation and support from both the regional and Iraqi governments. We have asked them to provide the people with basic needs, and the political parties should support this step, especially the leadership of the PUK and the Co-Presidents who have never come short in supporting projects like this in the past"

Ghazi Faisal, who is also a commander of the Peshmerga, added that the reconstruction of these areas is beneficial for many reasons, including protecting the Kurdish villages from being Arabized, the process will also be economically beneficial, as the region is very good for agriculture and maintaining live stocks which will be good support for the urban areas. The reconstruction of these areas will also weaken the terrorist remnants and will force them to evacuate the region.

Qarachogh Mountain is located near the disputed Makhmur, some 60 kilometers southwest of Erbil. The area falls between the positions of the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi Army.

Iraq has announced a military victory over ISIS in 2017 after 3 years of battle with the terrorists. However, remnants of the group continue to impose threats, especially in the areas that are disputed between the KRG and the Iraqi Government.

ISIS terrorists' sleeper cells exploit the security vacuum that exists in the disputed areas such as Makhmour.

ISIS militants ambush, kidnap and extort both civilians and members of the security forces in the disputed areas, which stretch across several provinces, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Saladin.

It is noteworthy that the disputed lands are mostly Kurdish lands defined by Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution as being Arabized during the fallen Iraqi Baath regime's rule.
