146 candidates from Kurdistan Region to compete in upcoming Iraqi Elections

146 candidates in the Kurdistan Region are preparing to compete for 46 parliamentary seats in the legislative elections to be held in Iraq next October.

 

The High Electoral Commission said during a press conference in Erbil, that the elections this time will take the form of electoral zones, and the region has been divided into 12 districts, 4 in Erbil, 5 in Sulaymaniyah, and 3 in Dohuk.

 

"53 people nominated themselves for the elections in Erbil, 28 in Dohuk, and 65 in Sulaymaniyah," the commission added.

 

Erbil will get 16 seats, Sulaymaniyah gets 18 seats, and Duhok 12 seats, and of the total of these seats there will be two for the Christian component.

 

The elections for the Iraqi parliament are scheduled to be held on 10/10/2021.

 

On Saturday alliance registration has ended and according to the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission, 42 alliances have been made among Iraqi parties to participate in the upcoming election.

 

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Movement for Change party have formed a unified electoral alliance to participate in one list in the upcoming parliamentary elections of Iraq scheduled for October 10, the announcement was made on Saturday late night.

 

Holding early elections has been a major demand of the popular movement, which led to widespread protests in the country since October 2019, and succeeded in removing former Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi at the end of the same year.
