On Sunday, the Russian government repatriated 34 children of ISIS orphans from the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) or (Rojava), during a visit of a high-ranking Russian delegation to the city of Qamishli, northeast Syria.
The Russian delegation, headed by Anna Kuznetsova, head of the Child Rights Commission to Russian President Vladimir Putin, met officials of the Autonomous Administration boards.
The Russian Commissioner Anna Kuznetsova and the co-chair of the AANES Foreign Relations Department, Abdulkarim Omar, signed an official protocol to hand over 34 children to the Russian government delegation.
The 34 children are orphans whose parents were killed while fighting within ISIS ranks, Omar said during a press conference held with Kuznetsova in Qamishli.
“These children deserve a better place than the camps with extremist ideology,” he added.
Omar pointed out that the handover process is primarily a humanitarian and moral process.
For her part, Kuznetsova thanked the efforts of the AANES officials to hand over Russian children to their government.
“The Russian government will continue its efforts to get children back from the camps in the coming periods, with the aim of taking back all the Russian children in Syria,” she added.
Hawl camp is considered one of the most dangerous camps as it consists of nine sections, eight of which are for Iraqi refugees and Syrian IDPs, and another for families of ISIS members. It hosts thousands of ISIS families.
Since the beginning of this year, the camp witnessed an increase in the number of killings that included displaced Syrians and Iraqi refugees.
Authorities at the AANES have continuously called of countries to take back their nationals.
