Today marks the 30th anniversary of the exodus of the people of Kurdistan Region in 1991during which more than one million civilians were displaced by the fallen Saddam Hussein’s regime.

After decades of revolutions and sacrifices for freedom and to liberate from the oppression and the injustice that they were subjected to by the fallen Baath regime, the Kurdish people in the Kurdistan Region began a popular uprising on March 5th, 1991, driving out the Baath Regime from the Kurdistan Region.

Following the uprising, the Iraqi Regime managed to recapture a portion of the Kurdistan territories through severe military operations which prompt millions to migrate to the mountainous areas on the borders fearing revenge by the Baathist authorities. Thousands of citizens died as a result of the cold and harsh conditions.

The strenuous military operations and hostilities carried out by the Baath Regime against the Kurdish territories resulted in a large-scale exodus of Kurdish people to the mountains and then to Iran, Turkey, and other western countries on March 31, 1991.

These unfortunate events and the event that shook the conscience of the world for the first time were defined as the largest exodus of a people who craved freedom, rejecting oppression, and tyranny at that time.

Citizens began to return to their cities and villages after the intervention of the United Nations and the Security Council's resolution 688 of the no-fly zone to prevent Iraqi forces to fly over Kurdistan.
