On Wednesday, a photo exhibition showing the tragedies of the Halabja chemical bombardment was opened in the Halabja Monument.

The exhibition was attended by partisan and governmental figures, as well as the families of the martyrs.

The monument of Halabja was opened in 2003 to honor the thousands of people killed in 1988 when Saddam Hussein's army infamously attacked the town with chemical weapons.

Thousands of local, foreign and Arab visitors attend this monument each year to witness those scenes that perpetuate this tragic memory.

On March 16, 1988, the fallen regime of Saddam Hessein carried out the most heinous crime against humanity and that was bombing the Kurdish city of Halabja in the Kurdistan Region with internationally forbidden chemical weapons.

The incident was the largest chemical weapons attack directed against a civilian-populated area in history, killing over 5,000 people and injuring over 10,000. Preliminary results from surveys of the affected region showed an increased rate of cancer and birth defects in the years afterward.
