Fish restaurants in Dukan receive great popular demands

Due to its geographical location and having a beautiful and magnificent dam which has formed an exquisite lake behind it, Dukan town, 69 km northwest of Sulaymaniyah, has become a major tourist attraction, especially during the Kurdish new year 'Newroz'.

 

Dukan is famous for its tasty fishes as people who visit Sulaymaniyah from all over the Kurdistan Region and Iraq must have Dukan lake fishes as it has a special different taste. 

 

Dukan town has many fish restaurants which a large number of people visit. The fishes are seasoned with spices and prepared either by grilling on coal or it is put in the oven.

 

Harem is the owner of Talan fish market and restaurant in Dukan. He has been working in the fish market for over 20 years and as he says, he inherited the business from his grandfathers.

 

Harem told PUKmedia: "I have been working in fish marketing for 20 years and our living depends on this business."

 

He says that their fishes are all caught at the Dukan lake and they catch fresh new fishes every day from different kinds.

 

"Dukan fishes are very famous and many people visit us daily, especially from central and southern Iraq," Harem added.

 

Kurdish fish chefs have their own secrets in preparing delicious dishes of fish. Kurdo who has over 15 years of experience in preparing and grilling fishes said: "We prepare the fishes on the preference of the people, some people like it grilled on coal and others like it to be put in the oven, but both ways have their own special delicacy."

 

He added: "I prepare and grill up to 40-50 fishes every day.. We used to prepare much more than that before the corona epidemic."

 

Kurdo pointed out that people who travel through Dukan must have their grilled fishes before leaving.

 

Soran Mohamed is a resident of Sulaymaniyah city who had visited Dukan with his friend just to have grilled fishes, as he says: "We visit Dukan two times weekly just to have grilled fishes because here, it has a different delicious taste."

 

He also said: "We can have fishes inside cities too, but Dukan fishes are different because they are lake fishes which made not just us but many people to visit this town just for eating fishes."
