Rawand Mala Mahmoud, a member of the Leadership Council of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and head of the party's Centre 2 in Kirkuk, represented the PUK at an international conference in Beijing, China, on Monday, 6 July 2026.

The conference, organised by the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), is being held in Beijing from 6 to 14 July. It has brought together leaders of left-wing political parties from Arab countries, Asia and Africa.

Held under the theme "International Seminar on Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the World," the conference focuses on China's reform experience, with particular emphasis on poverty reduction and the country's theoretical and practical approaches to development.

The seminar aims to deepen relations, strengthen political dialogue and enhance mutual trust between the CPC and left-wing political parties, while showcasing China's latest achievements in reform, innovation and poverty alleviation.

On the opening day, Mahmoud delivered the PUK's official address at the event, where he began by highlighting the history and sacrifices of the Kurdish people, referring to the Anfal campaign, chemical attacks and decades of persecution and Arabisation.

Mahmoud said the PUK was founded in 1975 by the late President Mam Jalal as a historical necessity and a leftist political movement fighting for freedom.

He added that the PUK has made the greatest sacrifices, with the largest number of martyrs and victims in the struggle for the liberation of the country. He said that today, as a leading political force in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the wider region, the PUK, under the leadership of President Bafel Jalal Talabani, will continue its struggle for justice, progress and service to society.

Addressing the current state and future of left-wing political movements in the Arab world, Mahmoud also praised the People's Republic of China's growing economic and technological role in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

He highlighted China's contributions to solar energy, infrastructure reconstruction and the automotive sector, describing them as important drivers of poverty reduction and economic development.

Concluding his speech, Mahmoud reaffirmed the PUK's commitment to strengthening its longstanding friendship with the CPC and expressed the party's desire to benefit from China's experience in innovation, development and poverty reduction.
