US President Donald Trump has said that talks between the United States and Iran are continuing, dismissing reports that negotiations had stalled in recent days as “false and misleading”.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump said: “The fake news reports claiming that communication between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America broke down a few days ago are false and misleading.”

He added that discussions between Washington and Tehran have continued in recent days.

Trump said no one could predict where the negotiations would lead but insisted that reaching a deal with Iran was necessary.

“This situation has gone on for 47 years, and it cannot be allowed to continue any longer,” he stated.

Earlier, Iran’s official Tasnim news agency reported that Tehran had suspended indirect negotiations with the United States following Israel’s escalation of military operations in Lebanon.

However, in interviews with US media outlets following the report, Trump said Washington had not been informed of any such suspension.

“They haven’t told us that,” Trump said in an interview with NBC News.

He added that a period of silence between the two sides could be appropriate and said he was prepared to wait.

“I think we’ve talked a lot, if you want to know,” Trump said. “Actually, I think silence would be very good, and it might last a long time.”

Trump also clarified that a pause in negotiations would not necessarily lead to military action against Iran, while confirming that US sanctions and restrictions on Iranian ports would remain in place.
