Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), is the only party president from Kurdistan attending the Munich Security Conference (MSC), which includes 450 senior officials and diplomats from all over the world.

President Bafel desires peace, following the example set by President Mam Jalal

Dara Khaylani, Head of the Foreign Relations Department of the PUK's Relations Bureau, told PUKMEDIA that President Bafel, the only party president from Kurdistan at the conference, is concerned with democracy and peace in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the region and that "He is attending the MSC with this goal in mind."

Khaylani stated that President Bafel's meetings with country leaders at the MSC demonstrate that the PUK is pursuing an effective peace policy for Kurdistan, Iraq, and the region, and that these meetings also help to secure international support for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, establishing the party as a modern entity in the region.

The role of PUK President and the Munich Conference

Firyal Abdullah, a member of the PUK Leadership Council, told PUKMEDIA that the PUK leader's attendance as the only Kurdish party leader in the MSC is due to the PUK's significant role in promoting peace and coexistence in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, as well as President Bafel's consistent efforts to uphold the law.

Furthermore, Abdullah stated that the MSC is concerned with the economy, specifically with efforts to integrate Iraq and the Kurdistan Region into the list of energy-producing countries through gas exports. PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani has made it clear that he wants the gas to be used for public benefit.

PUK President's efforts are praised

On the first day of MSC, President Bafel Jalal Talabani met with high-ranking officials, diplomats, and political figures, including former United States Senator Joe Lieberman, who supports the Kurdish people and is a close friend of President Mam Jalal. Lieberman praised President Bafel for pursuing a responsible and balanced policy. He expressed his satisfaction with the measures implemented, emphasising that such a policy benefits Iraq and the Kurdistan Region significantly.

President Bafel also met with John Kerry, the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, to discuss the political situation in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, as well as the effects of climate change on the country's environment. Kerry praised President Bafel's efforts to address the concerns and expressed his delight that he is carrying on the legacy of President Mam Jalal by promoting harmony and cohesion across political factions and parties.

President Bafel presents the PUK's strategy for peace & stability

President Bafel will attend a number of other important political meetings with leaders and senior officials from the Middle East, Europe, and the United States to present the PUK's policy and strategy in the face of current and critical issues.

The discussions will also address sustaining stability in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, as well as preventing tensions in the region, combating terrorism, and enhancing collaboration.

MSC provides important opportunities for discussion

The MSC provides an important platform for in-depth high-level discussions on global security issues. Furthermore, the MSC Foundation, established in the autumn of 1963, is celebrating its 60th anniversary.

MSC, founded by Ewald von Kleist six decades ago, has brought together global decision-makers and leading intellectuals to address critical global security issues.

There are no formal negotiations at the conference, but routes are frequently mapped out, decisions made, and solutions considered in the back rooms of the Bayerischer Hof Hotel, where the event has been held for decades.

The MSC kicked off in Munich, Germany, on Friday, February 16, 2024, and will last for three days,  concluding on February 18, 2024.

This year, the main parties to the Gaza war, the Israeli President and Palestinian Prime Minister, the King of Jordan, the Prime Minister of Qatar, and Egypt's Foreign Minister, are all present to discuss how to take advantage of the opportunity to find a solution to the conflict.
