PUK President: We Must Take Action to Restore Hope to Yazidis

Yazidis Genocide Anniversary

On the anniversary of the Yazidi genocide, Bafel Jalal Talabani, the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), released a statement.

The entire statement is as follows: 

Since the genocide of our Yazidi brothers and sisters occurred nine years ago, nothing has been done to address this heinous crime. The Yazidi brothers and sisters are presently becoming victims of political conflicts, and their homeland of Sinjar (Shingal) remains a wartime ruin. However, no concrete actions have been taken to indemnify them.

Slogans alone cannot adequately express our loyalty to the Yazidi Kurds; we must all take action that is performed in a national and humanitarian spirit to contribute to the restoration of hope for our brothers and sisters while avoiding exacerbating their wounds. It is our shared duty to remember this terrible crime and seek to recognize it as genocide. Certainly, we will remember the nations that have formally acknowledged that this act constitutes genocide.

We urge the Iraqi government to uphold its humanitarian and legal duties to the Yazidis, including paying them compensation and rebuilding Sinjar.

God grant prosperity to our resilient Yazidi brothers and sisters, and peace be upon the spirits of the martyrs and victims of this unforgettably horrific crime.
