On Sunday night in Koya, an unidentified armed group shot a member of the Kurdistan Parliament from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) faction, Karwan Gaznay, injuring one of his guards in the process.

The Kurdistan Parliament Speaker's media office released the following statement in this regard: "We vehemently condemn the incident and direct the security agencies to conduct an investigation and present the perpetrators to court in order to safeguard the rule of law and preserve the safety of checkpoints, whose primary responsibility is to serve the needs of citizens."

The event was also denounced by the green faction in the Kurdistan Parliament, which issued the following statement: "We strongly condemn this horrible crime and call on all relevant parties to apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous conduct as quickly as possible and receive legal punishment."

After the incident, Bafel Jalal Talabani, PUK President, received Faisal Karim Khan Bradosti, a member of the Leadership Council and Karwan Gaznay.

President Bafel stated: "The attack is concerning, and whoever carried it out has to be held accountable. The PUK will not jeopardize the lives and dignity of the populace and its devoted cadres, hence the legal process in this case must be implemented."

Karwan Gaznay responded by thanking President Bafel Jalal Talabani for being worried about their safety and for keeping in touch with him during the incident.

Karwan Gaznay: Assassination attempts will not discourage me from my stance
In a news conference, Karwan Gaznay spoke about the attempted murder, saying: "The persons who shot me were trained and attacked me with the purpose of assassinating me because the bullets impacted my car in the direction I was sitting in."

"I appreciate the security forces for establishing a committee as soon as the incident occurred and for taking down the cameras so that an investigation could be conducted, the criminals could be apprehended, and justice could be served," he stated.

Gaznay further stated: "I do not know the motive for my shooting, but if the assassination attempt is the price of my statements in the Kurdistan parliament over the past five years, I accept it because it was to serve the people and these cowardly attempts will not discourage me from my stance."

The PUK MP concluded by saying: "I have never had a personal issue with anyone, and I believe the assassination attempt on me was motivated by my desire to represent the people in parliament. As a result, I urge the three presidencies in the region and the security forces to speak out strongly against this awful event and work to apprehend the criminals and prosecute them."
