Dr. Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, the President of Iraq, commemorated the cooperation of the Iraqi people and the security forces, in all of their divisions, in the fight against terrorism on Victory Day.

On his Twitter page, the President of Iraq wrote:

"On the anniversary of the Day of Victory over the Islamic State (ISIS), we remember the sacrifices made by our people in Mosul, Sinjar, and other cities that were victims of ISIS atrocities in the face of a horrific attack."
"We honor the solidarity of our people and the heroic work of our security forces in all of its parameters, which enabled us to triumph and defeat terrorism."

The Yezidi and Christian communities of Nineveh and Shingal (Sinjar), as well as a large number of other residents from various religious and ethnic groups in Iraq, were under siege when ISIS marched into the province in early August of 2014 and seized large swaths of land in the country. Hundreds of thousands of people fled their homes under the threat of death, enslavement, and the force of violence. It is estimated that almost 10,000 Yezidis were killed in a few days. Thousands of girls and women were kidnapped and sold into slavery. From the big city of Mosul to the tiny Yezidi villages surrounding Shingal, the region was rife with violence as ISIS made clear its plans to commit genocide.

In December 2017, the Iraqi security forces, including the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, declared victory over the terrorist organization. This gave rise to the notion of "Victory Day," which is observed on December 10 every year.
