The top three Iraqi Presidencies affirm the importance of moving on with the provincial council elections that are set for next year as well as the necessity of thorough coordination and uniformity of national discourse.

Iraq's Top Leaders met on December 1, 2022, to discuss the nation's general state of affairs. They held the gathering in Baghdad's Al-Salam Palace. Speaker of the Council of Representatives Mohammed Al-Halbusi and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani joined President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid at the meeting.

Participants underlined how important it is to move forward with the provincial council elections that are slated to be held next year because they are part of the official curriculum.

The most recent governorate or provincial elections took place in 2014 in the Kurdistan Region and in 2013 in Iraq. The procedure was initially scheduled for April 20, 2020. However, amid protests calling for the dissolution of the current political system in November 2019, the elections were postponed indefinitely.

The ruling parties opted to defer any decision regarding whether to hold fresh provincial elections until after the early parliamentary election held in October 2021, following protests across the country, particularly requesting the dismissal of provincial administrations in the summer of 2020.

The meeting also focused on the need to harmonize political rhetoric on both the national and international levels, with a focus on the need for the laws that were agreed upon at the political agreement to be enacted within the timetable set for. This was in addition to the topic of provincial council elections.
