Coordination Framework leader: We support holding early elections

Iraq 11:30 AM - 2022-08-04

Hadi al-Amiri, head of the Fatah Alliance which is a member of Iraq's Coordination Framework, announced his support for holding early elections called by Muqtada al-Sadr.

Amiri's office said in a statement, of which PUKmedia obtained a copy: "We support holding the early elections called for by Mr. Muqtada al-Sadr, especially since the previous elections were marred by many suspicions and objections."

"This requires a comprehensive national dialogue to set a date, mechanisms, and requirements for holding them, and to provide appropriate climates for free, fair, and transparent elections that restore citizen's confidence in the political process," the statement added.

The Sadrist Movement protestors had recently stormed Baghdad's Green Zone and the parliament building for several days in rejection of the nomination of Mohammed Shia al-Sudani by the Coordination Framework for the post of prime minister.

More than 9 months after the early elections of Iraq, the country has only been able to elect the Parliament Presidency. The political parties have failed to reach an agreement on electing the new president and forming the government.

It is noteworthy that Iraqis took to the streets in October 2019 in massive protests against corruption and unemployment and called for the provision of basic services, resulting in early parliamentary elections in October of 2021.

The Sadrist Movement, which was announced the biggest winner of the election with 73 parliamentary seats, withdrew its MPs from the parliament leaving the arena for its rivals to form a government.

However, the movement rejected the person named for the premiership and organized mass demonstrations.
