President Salih: Redressing for Yazidi victims must be ensured and perpetrators must be held accountable

Iraq 09:29 PM - 2022-08-02

On days like this, we recall the eighth anniversary of genocidal and brutal massacres committed by the extremist group known as the Islamic State(IS) against the Yazidi people, (a religious minority in northern Iraq), President Salih said.

Additionally, he said, these crimes aimed at ending them together and it is, therefore, a sad chapter of history where human consciences are shocked.

Thousands of Yazidis men, women, children, and older people were killed and taken into sexual slavery by the Islamic State(IS), he went on to say, it is one of the most horrific atrocities in recent history.

It is, therefore, that perpetrators must be held accountable, the President continued while emphasizing the efforts made by the UN and the international community to hold accountable those involved in these genocidal and brutal massacres and to bring them to stand trial.

Human rights abuses should be detected and documented, and to be a witness for the generations to come, Iraq's Barham Salih underlined.

Moreover, there is one of the most horrific atrocities in recent history committed by the IS against humankind in our country, he added.

The passage of the Yazidi Female Survivors Law is the least we can do for the Yazidis people, Mr. President underscored.

Furthermore, compensation, financially and morally, for Yazidi victims that are covered by this law should be done to them, to secure a decent life for them, he added, that Yazidi displaced persons must be allowed to return to their villages, towns, and cities, and their home should be rebuilt.

We must intensify our efforts to disclose the fate of the 2700 Yazidi missing persons, who were kidnapped by ISIS, President Salih highlighted, and to do so, domestic and international efforts are also required.
