Iraqi PM: Political escalation increases tension and does not serve public interests

Iraq 12:06 PM - 2022-07-30

Iraq's Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, directed the security forces to protect the demonstrators and called on the demonstrators to remain peaceful.

Kadhimi emphasized, according to a statement by his media office on Saturday, that "Continuing political escalation increases tension in the street and does not serve the public interests," stressing that "the security forces have a duty to protect official institutions and the need to take all legal measures to maintain order."

Demonstrations erupted by the Sadrists in the capital Baghdad. A large number of supporters of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr entered Baghdad’s Green Zone early Saturday.
