Kurdistan 03:42 PM - 2022-05-02

The man who killed his wife and family members in Chamchamal was arrested by security forces hours after the incident, West Chamchamal Asayish Directorate announced on Monday

Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), thanked the security forces in a statement on his Facebook account.

"I thank the security forces who were able to arrest the criminal, who committed the distressing crime in Chamchamal, in a short period of time. Once again, I assure all parties that the criminal will be punished by law," Talabani said.

A man allegedly shot dead his wife and three of her family members over the so-called 'Social Dispute' in the early hours of the first day of Eid on Monday in the Chamchamal town of Slemani Governorate.

Right after the incident, Qubad Talabani assigned the security forces to arrest the criminal along with everyone involved in the case as soon as possible.

The deputy PM also expressed his regret over the occurrence of such a crime on the first day of Eid and sent his condolences to the people of Chamchamal, especially the families of the victims.

According to the wife's brother, the woman went back to her family's house 6 months ago after having issues with her husband and they had previously filed cases against him. The diseased woman left behind five children.

Mariwan Ahmed Hussein, brother of the wife, told the media that the man arrived at his family's house as they were having the Eid meal and started shooting at them killing two of his sisters, a brother, and a nephew, and his mom and another nephew are injured.

According to Hussein, the man later went to the house of another of his brothers and began shooting at them. Luckily, the attack did not cause any casualties.

Hussein pointed out that the killer, who is their son-in-law, is an officer who allegedly killed his own stepmom, nephew, and another person and got away with it.

So-called honor killings, domestic violence, sex, and gender-based violence remain on the rise in the Kurdistan Region’s patriarchal and conservative community. The issues are usually settled by tribal agreements and judicial codes when committed in families run by tribalism, often involving a large sum of money given as compensation for taking someone’s soul.

Small family disputes can rapidly escalate into violent events, leading to shootings and murders across the Kurdistan Region where gun violence remains widespread.
