Iraq's Coordination Framework rejects possibility of forming an emergency government

Iraq 03:10 PM - 2022-03-29

A leader within the Coordination Framework commented on the proposal to form an emergency government if the position of the President of Iraq is not resolved in the parliament session scheduled for Wednesday.

“Some talks about forming an emergency government in Iraq, if next Wednesday’s session does not resolve the position of President of the Republic, are aimed at confusing the political scene in the country,” said Issam al-Kuraiti, a leader within the Coordination Framework (the alliance of Iraq's Shiite parties, except for the Sadrist Movement).

“Baghdad went through difficult circumstances in previous governments, starting with Al-Jaafari and Al-Maliki, passing through Al-Abadi and beyond without announcing an emergency government," he added.

"The Iraqi reality is not with such a step, which has serious implications, in addition to the fact that general political understandings will not allow such a choice," he said, stressing that "last Saturday's session proved that moving without the Coordination Framework is difficult and everyone must open up and be frank to create a political consensus that pushes the country away from political blockage."

Last Saturday, the Iraqi Parliament postponed its session to elect the new Iraqi President until Wednesday due to a lack of quorum.

To make a quorum for the session, an attendance of at least 220 members of parliament is required. Sadr and his allies hold approximately 170 seats, while their rivals hold nearly 130 seats.

The independent MPs’ seats are estimated to be around 40.

Six months after the election, Iraq has only been able to elect the Parliament Presidency. The country is currently at a deadlock as political parties have failed to reach an agreement on forming the government.

Forty candidates are competing for the position of President of the Republic. The post has traditionally been reserved for the Kurdish parties since the elections of 2005.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has re-nominated current Iraqi President Barham Salih.
