UK, Germany condemn attack on Erbil

Both UK and Germany condemned the attack on the Kurdistan region's capital Erbil on Sunday early hours.

"I strongly condemn last night's attacks of on Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The United Kingdom will always stand against hostilities with our allies. This senseless act of violence has no excuse," said David Hunt, the British Consul General in Erbil.

"Germany strongly condemns the multiple missile attacks on Erbil last night. The perpetrators of this attack must be held accountable. Nothing justifies the use of force and violence," said the German Embassy in Baghdad.

Earlier on Sunday, Iraq's state media announced that the security forces have opened an investigation into the bombing incident that targeted the city of Erbil.

The attack injured two people, in addition to causing significant material damage, according to the governor of Erbil.

The governor of Erbil Omed Khoshnaw said in a press statement that 12 missiles fell on the city of Erbil, pointing out that the security situation in Erbil is stable, and that the security authorities are investigating the terrorist attack.

The governor of Erbil also indicated that the missile attack targeted the US consulate in Erbil.

The attack sparked wide condemnations from local authorities as well. The PUK's Bafel Jalal Talabani condemned the attack while confirming that it is the duty of all to protect our land and people and to face challenges. read more

Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, also condemned the attack saying that it is an attempt to sabotage security in the Kurdistan Region. read more
