U.S. confirms its support in combating Coronavirus throughout Iraq

The United States confirmed its continuous support for Iraq to face the Corona pandemic, revealing that it had provided $60 million to Baghdad.

The U.S. Embassy in Iraq stated that the U.S. is proud to have provided, so far, more than $60 million to support Iraq to combat the Corona pandemic, including more than $4 million to help renovate and equip Iraqi public health laboratories.

"Access to vaccination is part of the human right to enjoy health. Iraq began its campaign to vaccinate against the Coronavirus in March 2021. More than 14.7 million doses were given, about 21.21% of the population received one dose, and about 14.45% received two full doses," the embassy added.

The embassy referred to a peer-reviewed study published in the Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal that among the Arab respondents from Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq, Iraqis, in particular, were the readiest to be vaccinated. Pointing out, "This gives hope that the International Organization for Migration in Iraq will continue to support awareness and vaccination campaigns throughout Iraq."

U.S. Embassy continued, "Only 34.7% of the surveyed Iraqis indicated their willingness to receive the vaccine, with an equal percentage indicating that they are hesitant, while 30.6% expressed their rejection of the vaccine."

The embassy revealed that the high number of cases and the death rate in Iraq indicates that support is still needed to continue IOM’s COVID-19 prevention and treatment programmes, both inside and outside the camps.
