An explosion results in the martyrdom of five Peshmerga members in Kulajo district

Kurdistan 10:04 AM - 2021-11-28

On Sunday, KRG's Ministry of Peshmerga announced that it had thwarted a terrorist attack in the Kulajo district of Diyala Governorate.

The Ministry of Peshmerga said in a statement, "In a cowardly attack, ISIS terrorist groups attacked the outpost of the Fifth Infantry Brigade of the Peshmerga forces in the Kulajo district.

The ministry revealed that four members of the Peshmerga forces were wounded, and the Peshmerga forces thwarted the attack and chased the terrorists, and forced them to flee to an unknown destination.

After the thwarted attack, a Peshmerga force headed to the site of the terrorist attack, and a roadside explosive device exploded by the vehicle of the supporting force, which led to the death of 5 members of the Peshmerga force.

The disputed areas and their surroundings are still a hotspot for ISIS activities. The terrorists' sleeper cells exploit the security vacuum that exists in those areas.

Attacks on the Peshmerga forces have recently increased in the disputed territories. in the beginning of November, Peshmerga forces thwarted an Islamic State (ISIS) attack near the Kifri frontline on the Kurdistan Region's border with Iraq. Before that, the Peshmerga forces repelled another ISIS attack near Prde on Erbil-Kirkuk road, lastly two members of the Peshmerga forces were killed in another attack in the same area.

ISIS militants ambush, kidnap and extort both civilians and members of the security forces in the disputed areas, which stretch across several provinces, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Saladin.

Kurdish officials have repeatedly warned that ISIS militants are using “security gaps” between the Iraqi and Kurdish forces to carry out attacks in the disputed territories.

Despite the announcement of forming joint military units in those regions, however, the decision has not been put into effect so far.
