P.U.K 10:09 AM - 2021-10-19

Amin Baba Sheikh, the Spokesperson for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), emphasized the need for the Kurds to go to Baghdad with united ranks, stressing that the priority of the PUK is to secure a decent life for the people of Kurdistan Region.

Baba Sheikh said in an interview with Kurdistan News Channel on Monday evening, that "the Kurds can achieve a lot and amend the equations in Iraq if they go to Baghdad with a unified program," noting that "the PUK does not negotiate with political forces on the basis of the number of seats they own, but rather with whom that do not have seats as it wants everyone to participate because it is related to the future of the Kurds," stressing that there will be a void in Iraq without the Kurds and that "no Iraqi political party would dare to take a step without the Kurds."

Baba Sheikh also pointed out that there are fears that threaten the entity of the Kurdistan region.

"We believe that the unity of the Kurdish ranks is the only response to those who think of threatening the entity of the Kurdistan Region," he said.

Regarding the meeting held by Bafel Talabani, the Co-President of the PUK, with a senior delegation from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Slemani, Baba Sheikh said, "Our meeting was positive with the KDP, and we seek to meet with the other parties in the coming days and discuss the future of Iraq and the entity of the Kurdistan Region... We must build trust between political forces and between political forces and the people."

Baba Sheikh also indicated that the PUK did not start its dialogues regarding the next stage and that it is waiting for the final results of the elections to start a round of dialogues with the political forces, revealing that the PUK's Political Bureau will hold a meeting on Tuesday, in which a decision may be taken to start dialogues with the political forces.

"We believe that it is better to dialogue in the Kurdistan Region and not rush to conclude agreements with any political force, closely monitor the situation in Baghdad, and not to rush to judge any political force or bloc. It is best for us to plan together to make our decision regarding the political forces that are best for the Kurds,” he said.

On Monday, the Co-President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani received a senior delegation from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Slemani.

The PUK, who participated in the recent Iraqi elections in a joint list with the Gorran Movement party under the name of the Kurdistan Coalition, won 16 seats in the Iraqi parliament. The party currently holds the post of the Presidency of Iraq.

Last week, the general voting process for the early elections of the Iraqi Parliament took place all over Iraq, which ended with a low turnout of only 41 %. Candidates were competing for 329 seats in the Iraqi Parliament Council.

The country held the elections months ahead of its time. Early elections were one of the demands of the protesters who took to the Iraqi streets in October 2019 to vent their anger and frustration at the government's inability to fight corruption and provide them with security and stability.
