PUK: Iraqi Presidency post is for the PUK

P.U.K 12:51 PM - 2021-10-18

Following the meeting of the senior Delegation of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the spokespersons of both parties held a joint press conference and announced that the goal of both sides is unity.

Amin Baba Sheikh, the spokesperson for the PUK, said: "The post of Iraq's President is for the PUK and I don't believe there is a problem about that. The entitlements and people's rights are a priority for the PUK not positions."

"We need unity in the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad. For that, we need to visit all parties and all our efforts are for the Kurds to be united. We currently have a delegation in Baghdad to discuss with the parties," he added.

Amin Baba Sheikh also said: "All our efforts are aimed at going to Baghdad with one Kurdistani program, and at today's meeting, we talked about the elections and the formation of the Iraqi government."

For his part, Mahmood Muhammad, spokesperson for the KDP, said: "We made a friendly visit to the PUK to allay our differences and we needed to meet. We will also visit other parties in Kurdistan."

"The aim of the PUK and KDP is unity and we have not discussed the post of Iraq's President, but the post is a Kurdish share," he added.

"A joint committee has been formed between the regional government and Baghdad to normalize the Kurd's situation," said Mahmood Mohammed.

On Monday, the Co-President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani received a senior delegation from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Slemani.

The PUK, who participated in the recent Iraqi elections in a joint list with the Gorran Movement party under the name of the Kurdistan Coalition, won 16 seats in the Iraqi parliament. The party currently holds the post of the Presidency of Iraq.

Last week, the general voting process for the early elections of the Iraqi Parliament took place all over Iraq, which ended with a low turnout of only 41 %. Candidates were competing for 329 seats in the Iraqi Parliament Council.

The country held the elections months ahead of its time. Early elections were one of the demands of the protesters who took to the Iraqi streets in October 2019 to vent their anger and frustration at the government's inability to fight corruption and provide them with security and stability.
