Women's number rises in the new Iraqi Parliament

On Tuesday, Iraq's Women Empowerment Department in the General Secretariat of the Federal Council of Ministers described the winning women candidates in the early legislative elections as a necessary step for political participation.
"According to the preliminary analysis of the election results, Iraqi women managed to win (97) seats, 14 more seats than the quota for women, including two winners from minorities, while these results showed that (57) women won with their voting power without the needing the quota," the director-general of the department, Yusra Karim Mohsen.
Women won 14 more seats than the previous term of the parliament.
On Sunday, the process of general voting for the early elections for the 2021 Iraqi Parliament Council took place all over Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
Candidates are competing for 329 seats in the Iraqi Parliament Council, 83 seats are allocated to women, also nine seats for minorities.
The number of candidates across Iraq is more than 3,240, including 951 women, which is less than half the number of women who ran in the 2018 elections.
