Iraq's Grand Ayatollah Al-Hakeem dies at 87; President Salih offers condolences

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Saeed Al-Hakeem, died on Friday from a sudden heart attack at the age of 87, in Al-Hayat Hospital in Najaf.

Sayyid Muhammad Saeed bin Muhammad Ali bin Ahmed bin Mohsen al-Tabatabai al-Hakim was born (1354 AH - 1934 AD in the city of Najaf), and he is considered contemporary Shiite Authority and one of the leading religious authorities in Najaf.

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Saeed Al-Hakeem was one of the most influential Shiite clerics in Iraq.

Iraqi President Barham Salih sent his condolences in statement saying, "his Eminence Sayyid Al-Hakim was one of the prominent figures of the Islamic nation who combined knowledge with work in consolidating the values of justice, faith, love and peace."

"With this great loss, we offer our condolences to the Islamic nation, the great references, and the honorable family of the Al-Hakim family, asking God Almighty to magnify their reward and improve their consolation, and to cover him with the vastness of his mercy," President Salih added.
