Kovan Hassan becomes the only Kurd in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics

Kurdish Paralympian and holder of over a dozen Olympic medals, Kovan Hassan, will be the only Kurd in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

Kovan Hassan is originally from the Zilkana village of Akre district in Duhok. He is a 33-year-old with special needs. He arrived in Japan on Saturday to prepare for the Tokyo Paralympics which will begin on August 25.

Hassan was a member of Iraq’s Javelin team at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai.

A javelin is a light spear designed primarily to be thrown, historically as a ranged weapon, but today predominantly for sport. The javelin is almost always thrown by hand, unlike the sling, bow, and crossbow, which launch projectiles with the aid of a hand-held mechanism.

He is also the shortest athlete in the world to be able to throw the javelin to a distance of 42.85 meters long.

He had previously won (gold, silver, bronze) medals at the 2010 Youth Paralympics in Czech, in the Paralympic Games of London 2012, Hassan won silver medal. and in 2016, he participated in Brazil Paralympic games and won a Gold Medal in javelin throw.
