The Kirkuk Citadel was included in the preliminary list of the World Heritage List by the UNESCO, while an expert in archeology said that the Bestan Sur region is also a candidate in the preliminary list.

Archeologiest, Dr. Abbas Abd Mandil, told PUKmedia that "the Kirkuk Citadel is distinguished by its originality and exceptional global value, explaining that the UNESCO committees will determine the declaration of the castle on the UNESCO list."

The Kirkuk citadel includes building units, including the Qaysariyah market and the Green Dome, which date back to the Atabeg era (762 AH), in addition to archaeological houses, while research teams revealed that the village of Bestan Sur in Sulaymaniyah Governorate was the first area in which agriculture began about 9000 years BC.

The authenticity, safety and exceptional global value of any site is determined to be included on the World Heritage List, indicating that the areas of Ahwar, Babylon and the Erbil Citadel were also among the preliminary lists before they were added to the World Heritage List, Dr. Abbas Abd Mandil added.
