Qubad Talabani Inspects Progress of Kobtapa–Chamchamal Water Project.

Following his meeting earlier this month with the company responsible for implementing the Kobtapa–Chamchamal water project, Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani carried out a field visit on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, to review progress on the scheme.

During discussions with the project's supervisors and engineers, Talabani said: "The people of Chamchamal, Takya, Aghjalar and the surrounding villages have endured water shortages for many years. This project is therefore one of our highest priorities, and it must be completed on schedule and brought into operation for the benefit of the residents of this valued region, regardless of the cost."

The Deputy Prime Minister also reaffirmed his full support for the implementing company, stressing that every necessary facility and form of assistance would be provided to ensure work continues without interruption.

Project Details:

-Total Cost: IQD 139 billion.
-Start Date: Construction began in 2024.
-Current Progress: Around 50 per cent of the project has been completed.

Expected Benefits:

-Will permanently resolve water shortages in Chamchamal, Takya, Aghjalar and a large number of neighbouring villages.
-Will help revitalise the region's agricultural sector.
-More than 30 villages will benefit directly from the project.
