President Nizar Amedi visited the Baghdad headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on Monday to mark the party’s 51st anniversary, where he was received by Iraqi Justice Minister Khalid Shwani, head of the PUK Political Bureau in Baghdad, alongside a number of senior party leaders and members.
During the visit, President Amedi extended his congratulations to the leadership, members and supporters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, particularly PUK President Bafel Talabani, on the occasion of the party’s founding anniversary.
In his remarks, President Amedi praised the PUK’s long history of political struggle, sacrifice and national service, highlighting its role in defending the rights of the people, contributing to the establishment of a democratic federal Iraq and standing against dictatorship and oppression.
He described the PUK as a key pillar in strengthening democratic institutions and consolidating the principles of national partnership in Iraq. President Amedi also paid tribute to the party’s martyrs and Peshmerga fighters who sacrificed their lives in pursuit of freedom, dignity and justice.
Reflecting on the party’s journey since its establishment in 1975, the President commended the legacy of the late President Mam Jalal Talabani and the contributions of the party’s founders, members and supporters. He said the anniversary represented an opportunity to celebrate a history marked by courage, resilience and dedication to democratic values.
President Amedi further emphasised the PUK’s continuing role under the leadership of Bafel Talabani in supporting the development of the Kurdistan Region and reinforcing Iraq’s federal democratic system. He noted that the party remains an influential force in promoting stability, coexistence and national unity.
“The history of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan is a shining record of defending the people’s right to a dignified life, contributing to the building of a democratic federal state and confronting tyranny and oppression,” the President said.
He also expressed appreciation to the families of martyrs and the selfless fighters who dedicated themselves to the Kurdish cause, stressing that their sacrifices continue to inspire future generations.
Concluding his address, President Amedi reiterated his support for efforts aimed at strengthening democracy and serving all Iraqis regardless of ethnicity, religion or background, while wishing continued success to the PUK and its supporters.
