The spokesperson for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has announced that the party remains open to dialogue aimed at forming a joint, effective, and service-focused government. He stressed the PUK’s commitment to continuing along the path of President Mam Jalal and honouring the sacrifices of the martyrs, the dedication of its members, and the demands of the public.

Speaking at a press conference marking the 51st anniversary of the founding of the PUK, spokesperson Karwan Gaznay extended congratulations to the party’s members, Peshmerga forces, families of martyrs, supporters, and all citizens across the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

Gaznay said the PUK renews its pledge to remain faithful to the legacy of President Mam Jalal and to fulfil the aspirations of the people, the fighters, wounded veterans, and members of the Kurdistan Region.

“Why the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan?”

Reflecting on the party’s role after more than five decades of political struggle, Gaznay referred to a question once posed by President Mam Jalal: “Why the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan?”

He explained that the PUK was founded to empower young people and place them at the forefront of serving the homeland and the Kurdistan Region. He added that the party also seeks to strengthen the role of women, deepen relations with Baghdad, and resolve issues affecting citizens, including salaries and the federal budget.

Gaznay stated that the PUK aims to combine the energy of younger generations and women with the experience and history of veteran fighters, while also strengthening ties with all political parties in the interests of the people of Kurdistan.

Efforts to Resume Talks with the KDP

Regarding relations with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Gaznay revealed that efforts are under way to arrange a new meeting between the two parties.

“We hope these efforts will succeed in the near future so that meetings can resume and a service-oriented government can be formed in the Kurdistan Region,” he said.

He acknowledged that the PUK and KDP have different political visions and governing approaches, but stressed that they also share common interests that should allow them to overcome disputes for the sake of the country and its people.

“The national interest requires us to move beyond our differences in order to serve the country and build an inclusive government,” he added.

Alliance with the New Generation Movement

Gaznay also confirmed that the PUK shares a common vision and alliance with the New Generation Movement, adding that a formal agreement between the two sides will be signed in the near future.

“We will work together as one team,” he said.

“Our Doors Are Open”

The PUK spokesperson reiterated that the party’s doors remain open to dialogue with all political parties and forces in the Kurdistan Region in order to resolve outstanding issues and form a broad-based government.

“In particular, we are ready to engage with our brothers and sisters in the KDP to establish an effective, fair, and service-oriented government,” he stated.

A Genuine Partnership

Gaznay stressed that the PUK seeks to play a genuine and influential role within the Kurdistan Regional Government, arguing that the party’s electoral support and political standing make it an essential partner in governance and administration across the region.

Commitment to Promises

He concluded by reaffirming the PUK’s commitment to fulfilling its promises to the people of Kurdistan, including the pledges made by President Bafel Jalal Talabani.

“We want these promises to be reflected in the governing philosophy and programme of the Kurdistan Region,” Gaznay said, once again stressing that the PUK remains open to dialogue and committed to the formation of an effective government.
