The Grain Trading Company of Iraq's Ministry of Trade announced on Sunday that it has received requests from neighbouring countries to import Iraqi wheat, while reaffirming that current priorities remain focused on achieving self-sufficiency and maintaining strategic reserves.

Director General Haider al-Karawi told the Iraq's state media (INA) that the government is prioritising domestic supply over exports, citing economic considerations.

“The government purchases wheat from farmers at 850,000 dinars per tonne, while the global market price is around $200 per tonne, making exports at current rates economically unfeasible,” he said, adding that priority is being given to supporting locally produced “zero-grade flour”.

Al-Karawi noted that requests have been received from neighbouring countries, including Syria and Iran, indicating that exports could be considered if the Council of Ministers approves sales at prices exceeding 400,000 dinars per tonne.

He further stated that Iraq’s current food security policy has helped stabilise domestic markets despite ongoing regional crises.

The availability of strategic wheat reserves has prevented a rise in flour prices, with the cost of a bag remaining steady at 15,000 dinars. Without these measures, al-Karawi noted, prices could have risen to as much as 55,000 dinars, potentially leading to shortages and long queues similar to those experienced in some neighbouring countries.
