An international affairs researcher has stated that weapons repeatedly referenced by U.S. president Donald Trump are not in the possession of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), but are instead held by the Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and stored in its facilities in Erbil.
Speaking in a televised interview monitored by PUKMEDIA, Researcher Dr Mohammed Hawrami criticised the lack of an official response from the KRG Ministry of Interior. He said the ministry, particularly its leadership, should have issued a clarification following remarks of the U.S. President suggesting that Kurdish actors had seized weapons.
According to Hawrami, such clarification was necessary to reflect the position and standing of the Kurdish people, noting that the Kurdistan Region had declared neutrality at the outset of the U.S.–Iran conflict. He added that the regional government does not require such weapons.
Addressing an individual who identified himself as a journalist and raised the issue during a question to the U.S. president at the White House, Hawrami said that the individual was affiliated with a media outlet linked to the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), and accused him of attempting to damage the image of Sulaymaniyah.
He called on the media outlet concerned to hold the individual accountable, stressing that the matter relates to national security rather than political rivalry. Hawrami also noted that Sulaymaniyah is home to around two million residents, including supporters of various political parties.
He concluded by stating that the U.S. authorities are aware of the location of the weapons, which, he said, have been handed over to the KRG Ministry of Interior in Erbil.
