Iraqi President Nizar Amedi received Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani at Baghdad Palace on Monday, 13 April 2026, where the Prime Minister congratulated him on his election and and wished him success in carrying out his duties.

President Amedi expressed his appreciation to the Prime Minister for his courteous congratulations.

The two leaders reviewed the overall political and security landscape in Iraq, commending the role of national forces in facilitating the presidential election. They further underscored the importance of adhering to constitutional timelines and accelerating the formation of an inclusive national government that reflects the will of all Iraqis and advances their aspirations for a dignified and prosperous life, while reinforcing stability and sustainable development.

Both sides emphasised the necessity of unified national efforts to confront prevailing challenges and to consolidate the state’s institutional path in a manner that safeguards Iraq’s sovereignty and serves the interests of its people.

Discussions also addressed regional and international developments. The President and the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of de-escalation and the pursuit of dialogue as the primary means of resolving disputes, thereby contributing to the promotion of security, peace and stability across the region.

In separate meetings, President Amedi also received National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji and Minister of Interior Abdul-Amir al-Shammari, both of whom congratulated him on his election as President of the Republic and wished him success in the fulfilment of his national duties.

The President expressed his appreciation for the visits, underlining the importance of coordinated efforts between security and political institutions to safeguard Iraq’s security and stability.

His meeting with al-Araji focused on the latest security developments in the country, the challenges facing the security forces, and ways to enhance coordination and cooperation in confronting threats and consolidating stability.

In his meeting with al-Shammari, President Amedi thanked the Interior Minister for his kind sentiments, stressing the need to further strengthen security and stability across the country, and to support the Ministry of Interior in carrying out its responsibilities in consolidating the rule of law and protecting citizens.

President Amedi also received Speaker of Parliament Mohammed al-Halbousi at Baghdad Palace.

At the outset of the meeting, Speaker al-Halbousi congratulated President Amedi on securing the confidence of parliament and being elected President of the Republic. The talks focused on the latest political developments in the country and ways to strengthen coordination between the executive and legislative branches in a manner that serves the national interest and meets citizens’ aspirations.

President Amedi commended the efforts of the parliament in completing the presidential election process in a democratic manner that reflected the will of elected representatives. He stressed the importance of maintaining this approach to reinforce political stability, as well as the need to fulfil constitutional obligations, foremost among them the formation of a government that represents all Iraqis and responds to their expectations.

For his part, the Speaker of Parliament emphasised the importance of enhancing joint coordination among state institutions to address current challenges. He reaffirmed parliament’s commitment to advancing legislation that impacts citizens’ daily lives, supporting the reform process, and keeping pace with the requirements of the current phase.
