Harem Kamal Agha, leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc in the Iraqi Parliament, has described Saturday’s session on the presidential election as a critical moment for safeguarding the authority of the legislature.

The Iraqi Parliament is scheduled to convene on Saturday, 11 April 2026, to elect the President of the Republic, as most parliamentary blocs have announced that their members will attend the session. Meanwhile, the PUK’s candidate, Nizar Amedi, is understood to enjoy broad support across a range of political parties and parliamentary groups.

In a media statement, he said: “Today represents a decisive stage in preserving the dignity of Iraq’s legislative institution. The majority of Iraqi political parties agree that this is the day to affirm the will of the parliament, and that this will must not be undermined or obstructed.”

Commenting on participation, Agha noted that most political factions are expected to attend the session actively.

“There is a broad understanding that this national issue must no longer be disregarded. The country is facing a constitutional vacuum, and it is the responsibility of all parties to act today to fill this gap, allowing the political process to proceed along its proper legal course,” he added.

More than four months after the Iraqi parliamentary elections, held in November last year, the Iraqi parliament has yet to elect a President, a step that would subsequently pave the way for the formation of other governing authorities.

Meanwhile, most parliamentary blocs are calling for the presidential election session to be held, in order to bring Iraq out of its current political vacuum.

Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), currently in Baghdad, emphasised during meetings on Friday the importance of holding a parliamentary session to elect the President of the Republic, in order to fulfil constitutional obligations and safeguard political stability in Iraq.
