The Speaker of the Iraqi parliament, Haibat al-Halbousi, has called on political leaders and Members of parliament to attend Saturday’s session dedicated to the election of the President of the Republic.

In a statement issued on 10 April 2026, al-Halbousi urged the country’s political leadership and heads of parliamentary blocs to ensure their presence at the session, stressing the importance of completing the outstanding constitutional requirements.

He emphasised that the current security and economic challenges facing Iraq necessitate a united and responsible approach, calling on all parties to prioritise the supreme national interest and fulfil their national duties.

The Speaker also warned that the names of absent MPs would be made public, along with the names of political blocs preventing their members from attending. He noted that this measure aims to ensure transparency and keep the public fully informed regarding participation in the crucial session.

Saturday’s parliamentary sitting is expected to focus on electing the President of the Republic, a key constitutional step amid ongoing political developments in the country.
