One of the Suspects Behind the Assassination Plot Against PUK President.
The Kurdistan Region Asayish Agency on Wednesday disclosed the confessions of individuals involved in plotting the assassination of Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
In a statement received by PUKMEDIA, the Asayish confirmed: “Based on documents and evidence, we have obtained the confessions of those who planned the assassination of Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the PUK, as well as other political and security figures. The prime suspects in the case are Lahur Jangi Burhan and Azhi Amin.”
The statement further noted that, over recent months, the Asayish, in coordination with other security agencies, had gathered intelligence on a series of plots orchestrated by Lahur Jangi Burhan (Lahur Sheikh Jangi) and Azhi Amin, President of Kurdistan Region’s Asayish Council in Erbil. These plans, it said, were intended to destabilise Sulaymaniyah city and the wider province.
“These schemes aimed to incite unrest and violence, targeting political, security, and government figures. Documents, evidence, and the arrest of several suspects corroborate the accuracy of the security services’ reports,” the statement added.
The Asayish revealed that arrest warrants had been issued by the court for a number of individuals implicated in organising and overseeing the operation, including Lahur Sheikh Jangi. However, attempts by the Sulaymaniyah Police Directorate and Asayish to enforce these warrants were met with intimidation, threats, the mobilisation of militias, and the deployment of heavy weaponry in residential areas.
“After assessing the situation as an imminent threat with the potential to escalate across the city, the Asayish sought assistance from other security forces. Reinforcements were subsequently deployed to counter the movements of armed militias in Sulaymaniyah,” the statement explained.
According to the Asayish, on the morning of Friday, 22 August, armed militias opened fire on Asayish personnel as they attempted to execute the arrest warrant against Lahur Jangi Burhan. The ensuing clashes resulted in the deaths and injuries of security officers, significant material damage, and posed a grave risk to civilians. The statement also reported the use of heavy military equipment in residential districts and the deployment of suicide drones targeting Peshmerga leadership—acts described as no less dangerous than terrorism itself.
