INOC Branch to Open in Halabja at Deputy PM’s Request

KRG Deputy PM Qubad Talabani and INOC Chairman Dr. Aqeel Muftin.
Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met with Dr. Aqeel Muftin, Chairman of the Iraqi National Olympic Committee (INOC), to discuss the development of sports in both Kurdistan and Iraq.
During the meeting, held on Saturday, 26 April 2025, in Sulaymaniyah, both parties emphasised the importance of collaboration to professionalise sports and encourage greater private sector investment in this field.
Dr. Muftin expressed the INOC’s full readiness to cooperate and coordinate efforts to advance sports initiatives in the Kurdistan Region, particularly in Sulaymaniyah and Halabja provinces. At the Deputy Prime Minister’s request, it was decided to establish a branch of the Iraqi National Olympic Committee in Halabja soon.
The meeting also addressed the importance of promoting women’s sports. In this regard, Dr. Muftin announced they have decided to designate Sulaymaniyah as the capital of women’s sports in Iraq.
