As the Kurdistan Region approaches its parliamentary elections, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) is prepared to make a significant impact with a strong lineup of 172 candidates. Under the leadership of President Bafel Jalal Talabani, the PUK is committed to addressing the pressing governance issues facing the region and ensuring that the voices of the citizens are heard. With a focus on bringing qualified individuals into positions of power. The PUK aims to rectify the shortcomings of the current governance, promote justice and equality, and foster a sense of unity among all regions of Kurdistan. As the elections on October 20, 2024, draw near, the PUK emphasises the importance of each vote in shaping a better future for the Kurdistani people.
PUK President: Only PUK Can Correct the Course of Governance
In a recent statement, Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), urges the electorate to reflect on the current government's ability to protect the sacred land of Kurdistan. He poses critical questions about whether the sacrifices made for freedom have been honoured or if leaders are prioritising personal gain. President Bafel emphasises the dangerous trend of increased insecurity, as seen by foreign drones and violence against civilians, claiming that the ruling party has grown more concerned with its own interests than the wellbeing of the people.
PUK President highlights the importance of each vote as the elections get near, stressing that the outcome of these elections will have a significant impact on Kurdistan's future. He urges people to evaluate the performance of the ruling party and its inability to address the concerns of citizens. He advocates for a government that prioritises citizens' rights and liberties, in contrast to the existing atmosphere of fear that restricts free expression and results in the prosecution of writers and activists. He has a vision for a united and equitable Kurdistan.
PUK President encourages the public to vote for the PUK on October 20, stating that the party is committed to fulfilling its promises. He acknowledges the past challenges faced by the PUK while emphasising that the party is now at its highest strength and unity, capable of addressing governance issues. The PUK hopes to deliver critical services to all regions, eliminate discrimination, and restore Kurdistan's standing in the international community. His statement reflects the values of justice, responsibility, and a common commitment to a better future for all regions of Kurdistan.
PUK Remains Committed to Holding Elections
Today, the Kurdistan Region officially entered the campaign period for the Kurdistan Parliament elections. Despite attempts by certain parties to delay the elections, the determination of the PUK ensured that the elections will proceed, with a regional decree setting October 20, 2024, as the election date.
It has been six years since the last Kurdistan Parliament elections, and two years have passed since their scheduled date. Throughout this time, the PUK has consistently advocated against postponing the elections. Following this, the Federal Court decided to reduce the number of seats in the Kurdistan Parliament from 111 to 100, with five of those seats designated for communities. The Kurdistan Region has now been divided into four constituencies: Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, and Halabja.
PUK is Committed to Reforming Governance and Serving Citizens
The PUK, represented by number 129, aims to rectify the governance issues in the Kurdistan Region to align with the aspirations and needs of its citizens. The party is committed to ending discrimination and addressing the existing challenges in the Region, focusing on serving the people rather than entangling their lives and livelihoods in political conflicts.
The PUK declares that the current administration has failed to effectively serve the citizens and has strayed from its rightful path in ensuring a good quality of life and fostering justice and equality across all regions. As a result, the party is dedicating its efforts to correcting the course of governance through the electoral process.
PUK Enters Elections with 172 Candidates
The PUK is preparing to take part in the upcoming parliamentary elections with a strong lineup of 172 candidates, many of whom are young and highly skilled. Impressively, 88% of these candidates have backgrounds in specialised fields that meet the requirements of the Kurdistan Parliament, reflecting the party's dedication to electing qualified individuals into positions of governance.
An examination of the PUK candidates' qualifications shows a solid educational foundation. Data from PUK's Elections Bureau indicates that 22.67% hold advanced degrees, while 65.7% have bachelor's degrees or diplomas. A smaller portion, 11.62%, possess only high school diplomas or less. This varied educational profile highlights the PUK's commitment to selecting candidates equipped to tackle the Region's challenges effectively.
Moreover, the PUK's candidate pool demonstrates a youthful demographic, with 69.77% aged between 40 and 50, along with a notable representation of women, making up over 36% of the candidates. With 64 candidates in Erbil, 72 in Sulaymaniyah, six in Halabja, and 30 in Duhok, the PUK is well-positioned to make a significant impact in the elections.
The sixth term of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections is set for October 20, 2024, as announced by the Kurdistan Region's Presidency. The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) will manage the election process, utilising a multi-constituency electoral system.
