The Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has requested to delay the sixth session of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections until June due to the inability to carry out the procedure in May.

Elections cannot be conducted in May
According to a PUKMEDIA source, the IHEC informed the Kurdistan Region's presidency during a meeting that elections cannot take place in May this year.

During the UNAMI-attended meeting, the IHEC proposed postponing the Kurdistan parliamentary elections to June due to their inability to be held by the scheduled May date.
Kurdistan Region's Presidency: We are working to conduct a successful election
The Kurdistan Region's Presidency issued a statement after the meeting, saying that the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) have made significant efforts to organise elections in the region, fulfilling all legal requirements, and that they are currently working diligently to ensure successful elections with the same level of commitment and dedication.
IHEC awaits the ruling of the Federal Court
Previously, Jumana Al-Ghalai, spokesperson for IHEC, told PUKMEDIA that her meeting on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, with the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region and the United Nations Representation was to set a proposed date for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections.

"We are awaiting the court's decision; therefore, we will petition the federal court to address our complaints regarding the electoral law of the Kurdistan Region," she stated.

The Federal Court has postponed the hearing of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan's (PUK) complaint against Articles 1-9-15-22-36 of the electoral law in the Kurdistan Region 11 times. In the meantime, Saadi Ahmad Pire, the PUK Spokesman, stated to PUKMEDIA that the PUK is firm about its complaint and is unwilling to withdraw it.

Earlier, the Kurdistan Region's presidency announced that the region is ready to hold the sixth session of parliamentary elections in May of this year. However, the IHEC rejected the proposed date and requested that the elections be postponed by one month from the president's proposed date.
